Anger often gets a bad rap as a negative emotion to be avoided. But anger is not inherently “bad.” In fact, anger—like all emotions—can teach us something about ourselves and/or the world around us. Anger can help motivate us to make a change. It can alert us to an injustice. It can be proactively directed toward finding/implementing solutions to problems. It can be a great avenue to help us reflect on shortcomings and increase self-awareness.
On the other hand, however, anger can become problematic when it
- feels unmanageable or very difficult to control.
- frequently occurs “out of the blue.”
- is often “out of proportion” to the triggering event.
- causes impairment in daily living.
- results in consequences (ruined relationships, legal issues, etc.)
At Travco Behavioral Health, we provide anger management services for adults, emerging adults, adolescents and children. Through anger management counseling—which includes a combination of techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing—clients can:
- Learn how to express anger in a healthy way
- Boost communication skills
- Improve decision-making skills
- Build problem-solving skills
- Decrease stress
- Positively impact relationships
- Improve impulse control
- Gain distress tolerance skills
Understanding that anger has its place in our emotional spectrum is the first step toward harnessing its potential benefits while mitigating its risks. By learning how to channel this potent emotion constructively, we can turn what is often seen as a negative force into a catalyst for positive change.
